Workers

All Swiss Mountain dogs are “workers” in the truest sense of the word. The heritage of their farm dog ancestors, selected for their herding and guarding abilities, is still very active in all four breeds. Although there are dogs still to found working in their original capacity on farms, most mountain dogs are acquired and appreciated for their qualities of companionship and suitability as family pets. Nonetheless the working legacy is still deeply rooted in all four breeds and these dogs are always happiest when they have a job to do.

Herding instincts are particularly pronounced in the Appenzeller and Entlebucher. These breeds will guard and encircle family members or other pets to keep the “pack” together. Jumping tactics lend themselves to the technique of “body slamming” employed by the herding breeds to control the direction of movement of cattle. The ability to size up a situation with lightening speed is also a prerequisite of the working dog. This in turn influences the suitability of both the smaller breeds to agility, fly ball, obedience and freestyle where quick thinking, trainable qualities are appreciated.

The breeds are also known for their scenting and tracking abilities. Both Entlebuchers and Greater Swissies are used in the military or as avalanche or search and rescue dogs.
